What a Chimney Cap Does (and Why You Need One)

A chimney cap is a small metal cover with a mesh screen at the top of your flue — and it’s one of the cheapest ways to prevent some of the most expensive chimney problems.

Four jobs a cap does

  • Keeps rain out — water in the flue rusts dampers and cracks liners
  • Blocks animals — birds, squirrels, and raccoons love an open flue
  • Stops debris — leaves and twigs that can block the flue
  • Arrests sparks — the screen keeps embers off your roof

What happens without one

An uncapped chimney is an open invitation for water and wildlife. Water damage alone — rusted parts, cracked tiles, spalling brick — costs far more than a cap.

Already have a cap? Check that the mesh is intact and it isn’t rusted through. A damaged cap does no good.
