Chimney Leaks: How We Find the Real Source

Water stains near the chimney rarely appear where the water actually gets in. A leak can travel several feet before it shows on your ceiling, which is why chasing the stain wastes money.

The four usual suspects

  • Flashing — the metal seal where the chimney meets the roof; the most common leak point
  • The crown — cracks let water into the masonry
  • A missing or rusted cap — rain pours straight down the flue
  • Porous or cracked masonry

Why patching rarely works

A bead of caulk over a flashing leak dries out and cracks within a season. A real fix uses properly stepped and counter-flashed metal and a breathable masonry sealer.

Water is a chimney’s worst enemy. A small leak left alone rots roof decking and cracks masonry through freeze-thaw.

Quick answers

Why is water getting into my fireplace?

Usually failed flashing, a cracked crown, or a missing cap. We find the actual entry point.

Can you just caulk my chimney leak?

A caulk patch is temporary and cracks within a season. We repair flashing and crowns properly.

Does a chimney leak need urgent attention?

Yes. Ongoing water damage spreads fast, so it is cheaper to fix early.
